During World War ll rationing and shortages of materials meant that shoemakers had to look for alternative materials. Suede and reptile skins such as crocodile and snake were relatively abundant as these materials were not suitable for military footwear so shoe manufacturers started to use these materials. There was a 2½ inch restriction on heel heights during World War ll as high heels were considered frivolous as was the peep toe until the war ended. Ladies styles changed little until the late 1950s.
